Elephantiasis

Elephantiasis is the enormous swelling of a foot and ankle. It can be considered to be part of the symptoms of rheumatism, or it may be unrelated. Either way, it's likely to cause you discomfort (if not pain), impaired mobility, and not least of all, embarrassment of appearing in public.

Filarial parasites cause skin lesions in a condition known as filariasis or elephantiasis, and affect the lives of millions of people, especially those living in tropical countries. The spread of this disease is usually through mosquito bites. Symptoms involve a swelling and thickening of the skin and lymph glands, which can in some cases be considerable. Skin lesions usually persist for a long time

After which in time the larvae develop into adults (females can be up to 100 mm in length) and reside in the lymphatic system of the upper or lower limbs or groin (all species). With W. bancrofti, in human males the adult worms may end up in the lymphatic channels of the spermatic cord.

Some of the viral diseases carried by mosquitoes include, yellow fever; dengue fever; epidemic polyarthritis; Rift Valley fever; Ross River Fever; St. Louis encephalitis, West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis, LaCross encephalitis, and many other types of invasive diseases. Mosquitoes are solely responsible for malaria, which happens to be the world's leading cause of premature death. Since most North American news stations do not report on deaths caused by malaria, most of us are entirely unaware of the real threat that mosquitoes can pose.

Generally speaking mosquito control programs are designed at two levels, being for larger areas, and the smaller units. However, no matter what the magnitude every mosquito control program aims at eradicating the menace from the source and minimizing the number of pests if not completely eradicating them. In order to be able to achieve this target those involved attempt to bring about changes that will completely dissuade the mosquitos from flying into the region.

The pungent latex extracted from the leaves and flowers of Calotropis procera is processed and used in the commercial preparation of eye tonics. The alcoholic extracts of the plants have known to induce spermicidal and anti-microbial properties as well. Study on the ovariectomized female rats with the alcoholic extract of Calotropis procera is known to simulate the estrogenic activity in the reproductive track.

Microscopic section of the skin shows two distinct parts. Epidermis is the top most layer. The upper layer of epidermis contains dead cells which gradually cast off. These cells are gradually replaced by fresh new cells produced by basal layer which is the lower layer of epidermis.

The dengue virus is carried by the Aedes mosquito. It causes chills, extreme fatigue, severe pains in the back and joints, headache, and fever. Other symptoms are a spotty pink rash that first appears on the hands and feet, and spreads all over the body except the face. In other countries, dengue is known as "breakbone fever", "Panama six-day fever", or "Indian seven-day fever."
